Culture and Clubs at Northern Park Primary
A wide range of extra-curricular activities are offered by the school, to develop each learner in a holistic manner.
The cultural programme at Northern Park Primary aims to develop the interests and skills of our learners, through participation in cultural activities and clubs. Part of the school’s ethos is for learners to develop life-skills in the form of commitment, teamwork, confidence and creative expression.
The extra-curricular programme includes Eco Club, Choir and Chess.
Eco Club
Environmental issues are taught and promoted beyond the classroom with the aim of empowering pupils to participate in and take up meaningful environmental activities and projects. This allows for environmental education opportunities for our pupils, to make sure they understand environmental issues and to create awareness about biodiversity conservation and local environmental issues. They adopt eco-friendly practices like recycling and saving non-renewable resources.
Choir
Music is an important part of every child’s life at Northern Park Primary School and features on the timetable from Grade R to Grade 7. Whether it is a personal achievement on an instrument, or singing favourite songs in class, music can be the most wonderful catalyst for personal growth and character building. We have three choirs: our Dinky Choir (Grade R-2), the Junior Choir (Grade 3), which offers an introduction to being part of a choir “team”, and the Senior Choir (Grade 4 to 7). All of these choirs enjoy regular performances in and out of the school campus. We firmly believe that all children who show an interest in music should have the opportunity to develop it.
Chess
At Northern Park, we instil a strong sense of individualism and encourage our pupils to commit themselves to at least one extra-curricular activity, and we understand that not all children prefer sports. Chess helps build individual friendships and teaches children about sportsmanship. Children learn how to win graciously, and more importantly, how not to give up when encountering defeat. Chess encourages and rewards hard work. Children learn that those who practise and study the strategies win more games.
